Gareth Ainsworth has hinted that Shrewsbury Town could look to extend Jamal Blackman’s stay at the club after praising the goalkeeper’s impact since arriving in December.
The 31-year-old joined Salop on a short-term deal initially running until the end of January, but that was quickly extended to cover the rest of the 2023/24 season following a string of solid performances.
While there have been a couple of errors, the former Chelsea academy graduate has largely impressed between the sticks in League One.
Ainsworth full of praise for Blackman’s professionalism
Speaking about the possibility of a longer stay, Ainsworth was complimentary about Blackman’s performances and attitude, and suggested the keeper has the attributes to remain part of the squad beyond the summer.
“As the manager, you do look at your players and how they’re playing. I think Jamal’s made some fantastic saves. There’s one or two things he’ll say I could have done better on that, without a doubt.
“Jamal is that kind of person and will own any mistakes he’s made. But I think he can count them on one hand. In his 20 games nearly, or 16 games, whatever it is that he has played. I think Jamal would be a good player for this club going forward.”
Any potential decision on extending Blackman’s contract will involve input from director of football Micky Moore, with Ainsworth acknowledging the process is not solely down to him.
The former Burton Albion stopper has added experience and presence to Shrewsbury’s backline during a testing campaign, and Ainsworth suggested that with the right support, Blackman could be part of the club’s rebuilding plans.
Jamal Blackman Career
Blackman, a product of Chelsea’s academy, progressed through the ranks but never made a senior appearance despite signing multiple contracts. He gained experience through numerous loan spells, including stints at Middlesbrough, Sheffield United, Leeds United, and Rotherham.
He later moved to MLS side Los Angeles FC before returning to England with Huddersfield Town and Exeter City. Following a brief spell at Burton Albion, Blackman joined League One side Shrewsbury Town on a short-term deal in December 2024 after a successful trial period.
Writer’s view
Blackman has quietly become a steadying presence at the back for Shrewsbury, and his professionalism hasn’t gone unnoticed. Ainsworth’s comments suggest a willingness to reward consistency and experience as the club looks to re-establish itself in League One.
With the goalkeeping position often crucial in tight relegation battles or promotion pushes, keeping Blackman beyond this season could prove a smart, stabilising move.
