‘No Doubt’ – Former Portsmouth Boss On Relegation Battle

Former Portsmouth manager Danny Cowley has delivered an optimistic verdict on the club’s Championship survival prospects, tipping them to beat the drop thanks to one critical advantage: Fratton Park.

John Mousinho’s side have made their home ground a formidable place for visitors this season, with a run of just two defeats in 14 matches at PO4 lifting them to 17th in the table. With victories over promotion chasers Leeds United, Coventry City and Swansea, the Blues have made their mark in the relegation dogfight—pulling four points clear of the bottom three as the campaign enters its final stages.

Fortress Fratton Could Hold the Key

Cowley, who managed Pompey between 2021 and 2023, spoke on the BBC’s 72+: EFL Podcast, underlining the significance of the club’s home support and atmosphere. Drawing from personal experience, he praised the Fratton End and described the connection between the fans and players as a potential game-changer in the fight for survival.

“You’ve only got to look at Portsmouth’s home form this year. I know they say ‘football games are won on the pitch’ but how many games are won in the stands? If you compare their home form to their away form… at Fratton Park, it’s never 11v11 when you have the Fratton End, they have the ability to suck the ball into the goal.”

The former boss recalled memorable moments during his own time in charge, including a 4-0 demolition of Sunderland and a thrilling 3-2 win over Wigan Athletic during the 2021/22 campaign—results he believes illustrate the impact of home support in Portsmouth’s DNA.

Cowley also pointed out that the current relegation battle remains wide open, with as many as ten teams still not safe from the drop. But he believes the character of the city and its people will carry Portsmouth through the turbulence.

“They’re a fighting city,” Cowley added. “I have no doubt they’ll find what it needs to get over that line and retain their status in the Championship.”

With games remaining against fellow strugglers, Pompey’s home form could prove pivotal as they look to secure their second-tier status and avoid a swift return to League One.

Writer’s View

Portsmouth’s identity as a gritty, determined football club has long been tied to the passion of its fans—and in this battle for survival, it may be the defining edge. Cowley’s reflections reinforce how much energy the Fratton faithful bring to the pitch. With key fixtures ahead, continuing their impressive home form could make all the difference. While other clubs may falter under pressure, Pompey’s resilience and atmosphere might just be the secret weapon to steer clear of relegation.
