Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:
Colchester United welcome Grimsby Town to Essex on the back of a disappointing result at Bradford City but on a run of nine wins in 14 matches.
That form has propelled Cowley’s side into genuine playoff contenders and they’ll be looking to bounce back following the 4-1 loss at Valley Parade.
Prior to that defeat, the U’s had enjoyed a run of five wins in 15 days, including a defeat of fellow playoff hopefuls Port Vale.
There had been late drama against the Valiants as Fiacre Kelleher grabbed an 86th minute winner when it looked like Rico Richards had snatched a point for Vale a minute earlier.
Four days later, a 3-0 victory over Fleetwood had moved Colchester into the playoff spots after nine wins in 11 outings.
Quick fire goals from Lyle Taylor and Owura Edwards followed by a late Jack Payne strike gave the U’s maximum points.
Colchester United are currently 8th in League Two, a point outside the playoffs with eight games left to play. The U’s have amassed 58 points from their 38 games, winning 14 and losing just eight.
Colchester have scored 46 times this season and top scorer Lyle Taylor has 10 of those. The impressive Jack Payne is joined on seven strikes by Samson Tovide.
Payne is the leading creator with nine assists so far and Tovide has five to his name. The U’s average 1.2 goals per game.
Defensively, Cowley’s side have been incredible hard to break down and have conceded just 37 times at less than one goal per game.
Grimsby Town leapfrogged Colchester and jumped back into the top seven on Saturday thanks to their win over Newport County at Blundell Park.
That victory came on the back of two straight defeats, the only two defeats David Artell’s side have suffered in their last 11 League Two outings.
The Mariners had won five of the eight matches between defeats, including crucial victories over Doncaster Rovers and Walsall.
An inspired display from Jayden Luker had helped Town take all three points home from league leaders Walsall with the 19-year-old helping himself to a brace.
Defeats to Notts County and Salford City followed before Saturday’s 1-0 win over Newport thanks to a George McEachran strike.
The Mariners currently occupy the final playoff spot having earned 59 points from their 38 matches, winning 18 and losing 15.
Town have scored 52 times at an average of 1.4 goals per game with top scorer Danny Rose helping himself to 12 of those.
Grimsby have conceded 54 goals this season at a little over 1.4 per game and have kept nine clean sheets.
Each of the last 15 meetings between these sides have been in League Two and it is Colchester who just edge it with seven wins to four.
The reverse fixture in November saw Colchester leave Cleethorpes with all three points thanks to a late John-Kymani Gordon strike.
That victory was fourth successive win for The U’s against Grimsby following two crucial wins in the fight against relegation last season.
In April, Cowley’s side beat Grimsby at the JobServe Community Stadium by two goals to nil. The result was vital in keeping the club in the Football League, a feat they achieved by only three points.
The game at Blundell Park was a five goal thriller that went in the favour of The U’s, who were then managed by Matthew Etherington.
