Queens Park Rangers youngster Emmerson Sutton has described signing his first professional contract as a “surreal” experience following interest from top Premier League clubs.
The 18-year-old midfielder was linked with the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool during the January transfer window, with scouts keeping a close eye on his development. But Sutton opted to commit his future to the club he has called home since under-12 level, putting pen to paper on his first professional deal with QPR at the end of January.
Rising Through the Ranks at Loftus Road
Sutton has been turning heads with his versatility and powerful displays in midfield. Known for his dribbling and defensive abilities, he has featured both as a number 10 and as a winger, thriving in the QPR youth system. He also made headlines this season with a hat-trick against Arsenal in the FA Youth Cup, taking the match to penalties before QPR were defeated in the shootout.
Speaking in a club video produced in collaboration with the EFL and Two Thunder, the teenager gave fans an insight into his footballing journey.
“Signing professional is obviously a surreal moment and what you work for. It’s a great moment but the hard work starts now. With where I want to get to and the peaks I want to climb, this is just another step on a very long ladder.”
Sutton recalled his relentless training sessions growing up, often practising late at night outside Hither Green station with his uncle – a figure he credits as his greatest influence. That dedication was noticed early on by QPR scouts after he starred in a district final, scoring a hat-trick that led to his signing.
The midfielder also spent time on loan at Southern League side Hanwell Town last October, gaining valuable experience. The move followed an impressive display against them in pre-season, where he was praised for his energetic pressing that led to a goal in a 3-1 victory for QPR’s Development Squad.

Writer’s View
QPR’s decision to tie down Sutton early speaks volumes about both his talent and the club’s intent to protect their assets amid growing Premier League interest. While the speculation surrounding top-flight moves may linger, his grounded attitude and fierce work ethic suggest he’s focused on climbing that “very long ladder” the right way.
If nurtured correctly, Sutton could be the next Championship breakout star—and QPR may be reaping the rewards of their academy system once again.
