Lincoln City head coach Michael Skubala has confirmed that striker Bailey Cadamarteri’s season is over after suffering another injury setback.
The 19-year-old joined the Imps on a season-long loan from Championship outfit Sheffield Wednesday last summer. Having initially found himself in and out of the team, the attacker found his stride in December when he scored in three successive games against Morecambe, Huddersfield Town and Reading.
Disaster struck in January when the England youth international picked up a groin strain which saw him return to Sheffield Wednesday for treatment. This saw him miss nine League One games for the East Midlands-based side before returning from as a late substitute in a 4-1 win over Crawley Town earlier this month.
Skubala Confirms Reoccurence Of Injury
Following his brief cameo against Crawley, speculation was rife after he was not named in the squad for the trip to Birmingham City. He was then absent for last weekend’s 5-0 win over Bristol Rovers, although he was expected to return to the squad for this weekend’s visit of Exeter City.
It appears as if Cadamarteri’s stint at the LNER Stadium is over though, with Skubala confirming the news. Speaking to BBC Radio Lincolnshire, the head coach said:
“When he had his groin injury before we knew there is a high recurrence rate with that.
“He obviously came back for a little bit but he has felt it again, so we think that could be pretty bad news for him.
“We saw some good moments from him before he got injured and then unfortunately he has got injured (again) and that will be it for the season.”
Cadamarteri made 31 appearances for Lincoln in all competitions, scoring eight times.
Writer’s View
This is a bitter blow for Cadamarteri, who was enjoying his first stint of regular first team football. Sheffield Wednesday have high hopes for the teenager and were careful to pick the right club for his development last summer. With Lincoln having helped nuture the likes of Brennan Johnson, Morgan Rogers and Morgan Whittaker in recent years, they were seen as the perfect fit. It all appeared to be going well up until January and the attacker will be devestated with how his spell at Sincil Bank has ended. It’ll be interesting to see if the Owls opt for a similar move next season and whether Lincoln would consider a second spell.
