Preston North End Eyeing £2 Million Swoop

Preston North End are reportedly interested in signing Norwich City loanee Jacob Wright, despite the fact that the Canaries have an option to buy the Manchester City youngster at the end of the season.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, the Championship side could make a move for the 19-year-old midfielder, with a potential fee exceeding £2 million.

Preston Looking to Strengthen Midfield Options

PNE find themselves in a stable yet unremarkable position in the Championship table, sitting 14th with eight games remaining. They are neither battling relegation nor seriously contending for a play-off spot, but manager Paul Heckingbottom is already planning ahead for the summer transfer window.

Wright, who joined Norwich on loan in January, has attracted interest from Preston despite limited game time at Carrow Road. The England youth international has made seven appearances for the Canaries, starting four times and coming off the bench on three occasions. However, he was left out of the squad for Norwich’s recent defeat to Bristol City.

His versatility – having previously played as a right-back – and reputation as a top prospect make him an attractive target for the Lancashire club.

Competition for Wright’s Signature

Wright’s future remains uncertain, with Norwich holding a purchase option as part of their loan agreement with Manchester City. That clause gives the Canaries the first opportunity to sign him permanently, but Preston appear keen to explore their own move should he become available.

For Preston, midfield reinforcements could be a priority in the upcoming window. Club captain Ben Whiteman committed his future with a contract extension last January, but Ryan Ledson’s deal expires this summer, leaving question marks over his next move. Meanwhile, Stefan Teitur Thordarson and Ali McCann remain under contract, though depth beyond them is limited.

With this in mind, securing a promising young midfielder like Wright could be a crucial step in shaping Heckingbottom’s squad for the future.

Writer’s View

Preston North End’s interest in Jacob Wright signals an intent to invest in youth and build for the long term. While Norwich have the upper hand with their purchase option, PNE’s pursuit suggests they believe they can still land the talented midfielder. With midfield depth looking thin and uncertainty surrounding some players’ futures, a move for Wright would make strategic sense. Whether he opts to join Preston, however, will depend on the opportunities available to him elsewhere.
