Bradford City’s 10-match home winning streak came to a controversial end as they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to relegation-threatened Tranmere Rovers, leaving manager Graham Alexander frustrated with a pivotal refereeing decision.
The game’s decisive moment came in the 56th minute when Jack Shepherd was penalised for a challenge on Tranmere substitute Harvey Saunders. Josh Hawkes converted the resulting penalty, securing a much-needed victory for the visitors and halting Bradford’s momentum in the race for promotion.
‘Not a penalty’ – Alexander slams referee
Alexander made no attempt to hide his frustration at the decision, insisting his side were hard done by.
“Unfortunately, a decision went against us that was a wrong one. I’ve watched it back and Jack has played the ball. Sometimes as players, you have to assess the earlier decisions of officials and try to play accordingly. Although, I don’t know how you can do that and not compete. It’s not a penalty. I know it is not.”
The Bantams manager also expressed frustration over inconsistent officiating, arguing that similar challenges by Tranmere players were not penalised in the same way.
“We get a booking in the first half and the same challenge by the opposition is not getting the same treatment, which I thought was harsh on our players,” he added.
Despite the controversy, Alexander was keen to focus on the positives, highlighting his team’s defensive solidity before the penalty and the need to be clinical in front of goal.
Medical emergency delays play
The match was delayed for 12 minutes in the second half due to a medical emergency in the home stands. Stoppage time was extended to 15 minutes, but despite the added time, Bradford were unable to find an equaliser.
Alexander provided an update on the incident, offering reassurance about the condition of the affected supporter.
“We hope the guy is okay. It was relatively positive from the referee at the end of the stoppage that the guy was going to be okay. Fingers crossed, that’s the main thing today – that somebody is there to support us next week.”
Writer’s view
Bradford City will feel hard done by after a contentious penalty call cost them valuable points. Alexander’s frustrations are understandable, given his side dominated large spells of the match but failed to make their chances count. With the promotion race heating up, the Bantams must put this setback behind them quickly and refocus on their next fixture.
