Wigan Athletic have confirmed the appointment of former Preston North End and Plymouth Argyle manager Ryan Lowe as their new head coach.
Lowe, 46, returns to the touchline seven months after leaving Preston, where he managed for two-and-a-half years. The Liverpudlian has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract at Wigan, replacing Shaun Maloney, who was dismissed at the start of the month.
Excitement for a ‘fantastic football club’
Lowe expressed his enthusiasm for the challenge ahead, as Wigan look to climb the League One table and push for promotion.
“I’m pleased to be here because it’s a fantastic football club with history and tradition,” Lowe said.
“The club has had some good times and some bad times, and I’m here to bring the good times back. Hopefully, we can have the Brick bouncing every Saturday afternoon and Tuesday evening.
“I’m really excited about the project and I liked what the ownership group had to say. They showed me the vision of the football club and talked about getting the club back to where it belongs – and the first target is to get to the Championship.
“We’ve got to take short, mid, and then long-term steps to get there. We’ve got a vision and a plan, which is the most important thing. If we all buy into that plan and vision, I’m sure we will be successful.”

Experience and pedigree
Lowe is highly regarded in the English Football League, having previously earned promotions with Bury and Plymouth before leading Preston to three consecutive top-half Championship finishes.
His tactical style has been praised for its attacking intent, and Wigan’s board believes he is the right man to spearhead their promotion push.
Sporting director Gregor Rioch highlighted Lowe’s experience and ambition as key factors in the club’s decision.
“We are thrilled that Ryan has become our new Head Coach and believe he will be a fantastic fit for our football club.
“Ryan has a well-founded reputation in the English Football League as an outstanding progressive coach, having gained promotion with Bury and Plymouth Argyle, and guiding Preston North End to 13th, 12th, and 10th-placed finishes in the Championship.”
Writer’s view
Wigan’s appointment of Lowe signals a statement of intent as they aim for a return to the Championship. His track record suggests he is more than capable of achieving that goal, but he will need to quickly adapt to a new squad and instil his philosophy.
With a long-term contract in place, the Latics have backed Lowe to build a competitive team, but results will be expected quickly. His ability to galvanise the club could prove decisive in the final stretch of the season.
