Oxford United manager Gary Rowett has provided an update on captain Elliott Moore’s condition after the defender was forced off during the U’s 2-0 defeat at Hull City.
Rowett is hopeful that the hamstring injury Moore suffered is not a serious one. Moore, who had only recently returned from an adductor problem, was withdrawn just after the hour mark, with the match still goalless. Ben Nelson replaced him in the heart of the defence.
Rowett Optimistic Over Moore’s Recovery
Speaking after the game, Rowett acknowledged the disruption caused by Moore’s early departure but expressed optimism that the injury is not as severe as initially feared.
“He felt his hamstring. We had Cammy feel his knee a little bit, and Tyler Goodrham was ill, so not an ideal couple of days, but we’ll assess that over the next few days to see how bad that is.
Despite concerns, the Oxford boss believes Moore’s injury may not be a major muscle strain.
“I don’t think it’s necessarily a really poor hamstring pull or anything. We felt maybe it’s a little bit more nerve-based.”
The timing of Moore’s setback is far from ideal, with Oxford already missing key players such as Cameron Brannagan and Tyler Goodrham. However, Rowett remains focused on dealing with the squad’s fitness concerns.
“The injuries are certainly not helping us at the moment, but it is what it is, and we’ve got to get through that.”
Ben Nelson Returns to Action
With Moore sidelined, Nelson made his return to the Oxford squad for the first time since suffering a quad injury during the reverse fixture against Hull in November. The young centre-half is expected to play a bigger role in the coming weeks.
“Ben is a natural centre-half and has performed well previously in that position. I’m looking forward to seeing him and working with him.”
With crucial fixtures ahead, Rowett will be hoping that Moore’s injury is minor and that his captain can return to action as soon as possible.
Writer’s View
Oxford United’s injury issues could not have come at a worse time, as they continue their fight to climb the Championship table. Moore’s leadership at the back has been vital, and losing him for an extended period would be a major setback. However, Rowett’s optimism suggests that the skipper could be back sooner rather than later. In the meantime, Ben Nelson’s return offers a timely boost as Oxford look to steady their defensive line in upcoming matches.
