Cambridge City manager Jamie Cureton has hinted that he could return to the pitch before the season concludes, with his team battling low squad numbers in the Isthmian League North Division.
The 49-year-old, who boasts a career spanning nearly three decades with clubs such as Norwich City, Reading, and Bristol Rovers, has been named on the substitutes’ bench in Cambridge City’s last two fixtures. While he has yet to bring himself on, Cureton believes that moment is fast approaching.
Cureton Ready to Lace Up Again
With just eight matches remaining in the campaign, the experienced forward acknowledges that he may have to step in to support his squad. Despite his age, Cureton remains confident that he can contribute on the pitch.
“I probably will be involved now every game, just because of where we’re at. And yes, I probably will at some point play and make appearances.”
The former Premier League forward, who has played over 1,000 competitive matches across various levels of English football, has remained fit and involved in the club’s day-to-day operations. While he insists he will not play at the expense of younger talents, he admits that making an appearance at 49—and possibly at 50 next season—has a certain appeal.
“Yes, it’s a bit mad. I suppose stupidly I’m like, well, if I can make an appearance this year at 49 then I’ll make another one at 50 and maybe that might be it. So maybe I’ll be the oldest player in the league.”
Balancing Development and Experience
Despite the possibility of playing himself, Cureton remains focused on the club’s long-term vision. He highlighted his commitment to developing young players by prioritising their game time over his own.
“I wouldn’t do it at the detriment of my team. Not at all. Even today, I threw Kingy (Ryan King) on, who’s a young 17-year-old who’s got a bright future. I’d rather him start to get experience and build himself so that he can hopefully be part of the first-team squad more next year.”
His experience as a player-manager has given him a unique perspective, allowing him to step back when necessary while still being available as a last resort.
Writer’s View
Jamie Cureton’s potential return to the pitch is nothing short of remarkable. His longevity in football is a testament to his dedication and love for the game. While some may question the practicality of a near-50-year-old playing in a competitive league, his vast experience and sharp footballing mind could prove invaluable in key moments. If he does step onto the pitch, it would be another memorable milestone in a career filled with incredible achievements.
