Swansea City are considering whether to hand temporary manager Alan Sheehan the job on a permanent basis, according to reports.
The 38-year-old is in his second stint as interim boss having taken on the reins following the sacking of Luke Williams in February. The Swans parted company with the former Notts County head coach following a 3-1 defeat against Stoke City, a seventh loss in nine league outings. That loss also saw the club plunge to 17th in the Championship, whilst also sitting just eight points above the relegation places.
Sheehan had previously held the fort following Michael Duff’s exit in December 2023. His latest spell has started brightly, picking up two wins and a draw in his three games in charge whilst also keeping three clean sheets.
This has seen Swansea move up to 15th. More importantly though, they are now 12 points ahead of Derby County, who occupy the final relegation place.
Sheehan Form Sparks Swansea Rethink
Understandably, Sheehan’s upturn in results has sparked Swansea into a rethink. They had previously been linked with the likes of Des Buckingham and Eric Ramsay, although were also considering a manager from outside the country.
It now appears as if the former Leeds United defender has emerged as the frontrunner. Speaking to EFL Analysis, transfer expert Graeme Bailey delivered an update:
“I am told that Sheehan has a very good chance of getting it.
“I know a few European names who have been put to them and they are assessing options.
“They were always looking at the international break. But, as I said, I think Sheehan might now get it.”
Sheehan will be looking to make it four games without a defeat tomorrow night when they travel to mid-table Watford, who are currently five points above Swansea.
Writer’s View
Swansea are clearly taking their time with their decision. They will be keen to make sure they bring the right man in to lead the team forward and Sheehan might just be the man to do that. With their recent mini-revival and their place in next season’s Championship all but confirmed, the Welsh-based outfit can afford to take their time. They may be best placed allowing Sheehan to continue until the end of the season and make a decision from there.
