Sunderland could be in the mix for a prolific Championship striker this summer, as Emil Riis Jakobsen is reportedly set to leave Preston North End at the end of the season.
The Danish forward, who has been with Preston since 2020, has netted 43 goals across all competitions for the club. The 26-year-old previously made his mark at Danish side Randers, contributing to a career total of 61 goals.
Despite being linked with a move to the Stadium of Light in January, no formal bid from the Black Cats was made, and Jakobsen remained at Deepdale. However, with his contract due to expire next year, speculation is mounting that he could be on the move when the transfer window reopens.
Interest Growing as Contract Winds Down
Jakobsen’s time at Preston appears to be nearing its conclusion, with reports suggesting he is unlikely to extend his stay. According to Lancashire Post journalist George Hodgson, the striker is expected to seek a fresh challenge.
“Yeah, I think the expectation is he’s going to be leaving,” Hodgson said. “So we’ll see what happens. It wasn’t completely ruled out by the manager because I think Emil Riis has enjoyed playing with him and working under him.
“But yeah, the noises are that he fancies something new and won’t be signing a new deal. So, I will be interested to see where he goes. Obviously, he’s an ambitious striker. He’s shown he can score at this level. So I think there’ll be a few suitors. Maybe Sunderland will be one of them if they’re still in this league next season.”
While Hodgson suggests Jakobsen has enjoyed working under manager Paul Heckingbottom, the lure of a new challenge appears to be his preferred option. That could open the door for Sunderland, particularly if they remain in the Championship and look to bolster their attacking options.

Writer’s View
Jakobsen’s potential departure could be a significant opportunity for Sunderland. The Black Cats have been on the lookout for a proven goalscorer, and the Danish forward fits the bill. With a track record of scoring in the Championship, he would bring much-needed firepower to a Sunderland side that has lacked a consistent striker in recent seasons.
If Preston cannot convince him to stay, the competition for his signature will likely be fierce, and Sunderland will have to act decisively if they wish to secure his services.
