Sheffield Wednesday Boss Addresses Southampton Links

Sheffield Wednesday head coach Danny Rohl has brushed off rumours linking him with the Southampton job, only three months after he was previously linked to the role at St Mary’s.

The German has emerged as one of the top young coaches in the EFL after performing a wonderful job at Hillsborough since joining in 2023. He performed a minor miracle last season to help the club avoid relegation before flirting with a play-off place this term

The Owls have spent much of the campaign just outside the top six. However, they have stuttered a bit in recent weeks, losing four of their last five to fall to 13th.

Despite that, Southampton are said to be lining up a summer move for the 35-year-old. News emerged yesterday that the Saints are preparing to axe manager Ivan Juric at the end of the season, having only appointed the 49-year-old in December.

Rohl Has His Say On Southampton Links

Southampton made the decision to part company with manager Russell Martin in December. Rohl was immediately installed as one of the favourites to land the position but opted to remain in Yorkshire. This latest news has put him back in the frame, prompting yet another response. Speaking to The Sheffield Starhe said:

“It’s absolutely no problem for me, I’m not listening to left and right – my focus is here. I know what we have to do, I know my responsibility for the group here, for the club, for our massive fans. I think this is all that is important, not some headline… I think sometimes there is too much outside, and for me it’s no problem to avoid this.

“Everyone knows my contract situation, there is no reason why we should talk now about anything else. It’s only about the next game, and the next 11 games we should be fully focused on our performances and results – we want to get as many points as we can.”

Writer’s View

It’s only a matter of time before Danny Rohl opts to take on a role higher up the football pyramid, but it would be a surprise if it’s Southampton. The Saints look nailed on to return to the Championship and currently sit rock bottom of the Premier League having picked up just nine points all season. However, the German has endured a tricky relationship with Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri and it could well be that he departs Hillsborough this summer. With other clubs perhaps looking at changing managers in the close season, Rohl could be a name that appears on a number of lists.
