Wigan Athletic Caretaker Reveals Decision Behind Appointment

Glenn Whelan has revealed that he spoke to sacked Wigan Athletic manager Shaun Maloney before taking up the interim post at the club.

The Latics moved to oust their manager of two years over the weekend after their loss to Reading, with assistant Whelan handed the reins for their midweek match against Mansfield Town.

Whelan Reveals Maloney Contact

Speaking to Wigan Today, Whelan, who joined the club in September, revealed that he sought the blessing of his predecessor in order to take the job. He said:

“Look I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t want to do it. But I had to speak to Shaun because, wherever I’ve been, I’ve always tried to be as loyal as I can.

“I got his backing to do the job, and see what I can do. I’ve been in football all my life, it’s something I want to be in and around, and when you get an opportunity like this, I was never going to turn it down.”

It is the first time the former Stoke City player has taken charge of a senior game, and he was also asked as to whether he would consider taking the role in Lancashire on a full-time basis.

“Listen, I’m brand new to the coaching game. It’s something I obviously want to do in the future but, for me now, it’s just day to day and we’ll see what happens.

“Obviously the people in charge are going to do what’s best for Wigan and for the players, and whatever that is, who knows?”

Speculation has been rife about who will replace Shaun Maloney at Wigan Athletic, with Ryan Lowe at the forefront of that discussion after the former Preston North End boss was spotted at the match against Reading. Glenn Whelan will likely not get a chance this time around but did put in a good showing for his first game in management. Whilst their offensive play left much to be desired, he did well to shut down Mansfield’s attack and earned a point for their troubles. It will be interesting to see what he can do against Cambridge United this weekend if his afforded the opportunity.
