Leyton Orient manager Richie Wellens believes Jack Currie’s early red card was the decisive moment in their 2-0 defeat against League One leaders Birmingham City.
The O’s started brightly at St Andrew’s, but Currie’s 12th-minute dismissal for a challenge on Tomoki Iwata left them facing an uphill battle. Second-half goals from Taylor Gardner-Hickman and Ethan Laird sealed the win for the hosts, extending their lead at the top of the table to nine points.
Wellens Unhappy with Red Card Decision
Wellens felt his team had the upper hand before the sending-off and questioned the decision to dismiss Currie.
Speaking to BBC Radio London after the match, he said:
“I thought for the first 10 minutes we were on top and that decision was game changing. I’m gutted for my players because I didn’t get an opportunity to see how far they’ve come and to go toe-to-toe.
“In my opinion, it wasn’t a sending off. Jack kicked the ball first.”

Referee Selection Questioned
Wellens also raised concerns over the choice of referee, suggesting a more experienced official should have overseen the game given the limited number of Premier League and Championship fixtures on the night.
Martin Woods took charge of the match, having officiated only League One, League Two, and National League fixtures this season.
Wellens added:
“There’s hardly any Premier League and Championship games today, why can’t we have a referee from that level? It’s a big ground [with a] big support base.”
What’s Next for Leyton Orient?
Despite the defeat, Orient remain in sixth place, occupying the final play-off spot ahead of Charlton Athletic on goal difference. Their focus now turns to a crucial home clash against the Addicks at Brisbane Road on Saturday.
Writer’s View
Wellens has every right to feel frustrated, as the red card undoubtedly changed the dynamic of the game. Orient had started well and looked capable of troubling Birmingham before being reduced to ten men.
However, while refereeing decisions will always be debated, Orient must quickly regroup ahead of their promotion battle. Their play-off spot remains under threat, and Saturday’s meeting with Charlton could prove pivotal in the race for the top six.
