Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:

Both sides head into this fixture on the back of two straight defeats and the hosts have won just once in their previous five matches and have not won at home for four matches.

Last time out, Wednesday were handsomely beaten by promotion-chasing Burnley, going down 4-0 at Turf Moor. The Owls almost held out to halftime but eventually succumbed to goals from Marcus Edwards, Josh Brownhill, Connor Roberts and Manuel Benson.

Six days earlier Coventry City had left Hillsborough with all three points thanks to a stoppage-time winner from Ells Simms. The former Everton striker had given his side the lead quarter of an hour in before a Joel Latibeaudiere own goal had drawn the Black Cats level.

Wednesday’s last win came in the days before Valentine’s Day thanks to a Michael Smith goal away at Swansea City.

Danny Rohl’s side finds themselves right in the middle of the Championship table in 12th place having collected 45 points from their 34 games. The Owls will still be hopeful of achieving a playoff spot as they sit just six points behind Blackburn Rovers who occupy sixth.

Sheffield Wednesday has scored 45 goals this season with top scorer Josh Windass helping himself to ten of those. The evergreen Barry Bannan continues to impress in midfield and has chipped in with four goals of his own.

The Owls have been poor defensively, conceding 54 goals at an average of 1.6 per game and have managed to keep eight clean sheets.

Sunderland travel to Hillsborough on the back of a disappointing defeat at home to relegation-threatened Hull City, going down 1-0 at the Stadium of Light.

Last Monday brought a heartbreaking defeat at Elland Road as Leeds United snatched victory thanks to a 95th-minute Pascal Struijk strike. Before that visit to Yorkshire, Regis Le Bris’ side had gone six games without defeat placing themselves firmly in the fight for promotion.

During that six-game run, the Black Cats had taken a point at Burnley and at home to Plymouth Argyle and Watford and picked up all three on the road at Derby County and rivals Middlesbrough as well as beating Luton Town at home.

Sunderland is currently 4th in the Championship and looks secure in the playoffs with a 12-point lead over 7th places Coventry City. The Mackems have 62 points from their 34 games and have scored 50 goals at an average of 1.5 per match.

They are also very tight at the back, with the joint 4th best defensive record in the league having conceded just 31 goals at an average of 0.9 per game.

French striker Wilson Isidor is the club’s top scorer with 12 goals while right-back Trai Hume leads the assist charts with five alongside Patrick Roberts and Eliezer Mayenda.

The last ten meetings between these sides are Sheffield Wednesday just holding the edge over their opponents, with five wins to four.

This season’s earlier meeting saw Sunderland dispose of Wednesday comfortably, beating them 4-0 at the Stadium of Light back in August. First-half strikes from Dennis Cirkin, Eliezer Mayenda and Luke O’Nien put the game out of reach for Wednesday before the end of the first period. Mayenda grabbed his second moments into the second half to end the scoring.

Last season saw the away side take the three points home with them in both fixtures as Sunderland won 3-0 in Yorkshire and Wednesday beat the Black Cats 2-0 on their own patch.

During the 2021-22 season, these two met on four occasions during the League One season with Wednesday winning 3-0 at home but losing 5-0 away during the regular season. They would then meet again over two legs in the playoffs with Sunderland edging that tie 2-1 on aggregate to book their place at Wembley and eventually achieve promotion to the Championship.
