Front Runner Emerges In Swansea City Manager Hunt

Swansea City are reportedly considering former Oxford United boss Des Buckingham as they search for a new manager following the departure of Luke Williams.

The Welsh club, currently struggling in the Championship, are keen to bring in fresh leadership to turn their fortunes around. According to TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, Buckingham is “highly thought of” by the Swansea hierarchy, making him a potential contender for the vacant role at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Des Buckingham Emerges as a Candidate

Oxford United dismissed the 40-year-old coach in December despite guiding the club to promotion from League One last season. His exit was met with surprise across the Football League, and he has since been weighing up his next move.

After being appointed by Oxford United in November 2023, Buckingham quickly made an impact, leading the U’s to play-off success at Wembley, where they defeated Bolton Wanderers. However, just months into the current campaign, he was replaced by Gary Rowett, a widely criticised decision.

“The reaction (to Buckingham’s sacking) was totally understandable and completely expected. We understand that there are a lot of people out there who were really hurt that Des is no longer our manager,” said Oxford United chief executive Tim Williams on BBC Radio Oxford’s The Dub podcast.

Buckingham’s Managerial Journey

Buckingham began his coaching career with Reading and Oxford United before moving to New Zealand, where he worked with Wellington Phoenix and the national team set-up. His managerial experience then took him to India, where he took charge of Mumbai City in 2021.

His time in India was successful, as he led Mumbai City to the Indian Super League title and gained a reputation for implementing an attractive, attacking style of play.

What’s Next for Swansea and Buckingham?

Swansea’s immediate priority is securing Championship survival, and bringing in a manager with a proven track record of stabilising teams could be crucial in achieving that goal.

Buckingham’s experience across multiple leagues and his ability to develop squads make him an intriguing option for the Swans. However, whether he is the club’s preferred choice remains to be seen as the search for Williams’ successor continues.

Writer’s View

Swansea City’s decision to part ways with Williams suggests they are looking for a fresh approach to guide them through the remainder of the season. Buckingham’s reputation for developing young players and his experience across different footballing cultures could make him an ideal fit. However, given his surprising departure from Oxford United, there will be questions over whether he is ready for another Championship challenge so soon.
