Middlesbrough Eyeing Former Premier League Boss As Carrick Replacement

Former Leicester City manager Steve Cooper has emerged as a surprise contender to replace Michael Carrick at Middlesbrough, as speculation over the Teessiders’ managerial position intensifies.

Carrick, who took charge in October 2022, has endured a difficult run of form, winning just three of his last 15 matches. As a result, Middlesbrough have slipped to 11th in the Championship, four points adrift of the play-off places.

Cooper a Strong Contender?

According to reports from TalkSPORT, Cooper is being considered as a potential replacement should Middlesbrough decide to make a change in the dugout. The 48-year-old has been out of work since leaving Leicester City in November and is said to be weighing up his next move.

Cooper’s time at the King Power Stadium was short-lived, but his previous success in the Championship—leading Nottingham Forest to Premier League promotion in 2022—has kept his reputation strong. His experience at both club and international youth level could make him an appealing candidate for Middlesbrough.

Blackburn Rovers have also been linked with Cooper, following John Eustace’s departure to Derby County. However, the Welshman has yet to commit to any new role.

Carrick Under Scrutiny

The pressure has been mounting on Carrick, particularly after Middlesbrough’s home defeat to Watford. Fans were quick to criticise the performance of new signing Kelechi Iheanacho, a player Carrick brought in from Leicester during the January transfer window.

While Carrick remains in charge for now, recent results suggest the club may consider a change. With only 15 games remaining in the season, Middlesbrough face an uphill battle to secure a play-off spot.

How Does Cooper Compare?

Statistically, Cooper has more managerial experience than Carrick, having overseen 303 matches compared to Carrick’s 122. However, Carrick’s win percentage stands at 46.7%—significantly higher than Cooper’s 31.02%.

Despite this, Cooper’s ability to guide Nottingham Forest to promotion could work in his favour. With Middlesbrough eager to return to the Premier League, his track record in high-pressure Championship campaigns might appeal to the club’s hierarchy.

Writer’s View

Michael Carrick remains in post for now, but Middlesbrough’s play-off hopes are slipping away. If results do not improve, a managerial change could be on the horizon. Steve Cooper’s name will likely continue to be linked with the role, and given his previous Championship success, it would not be a shock if he was given another shot at a promotion push.
