‘Failed Better’ – Grimsby Town Boss Makes Bold Claim

Grimsby Town manager David Artell believes his side’s 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers highlights their progress under his leadership.

The Mariners secured three points at the Eco-Power Stadium on Saturday, marking a significant improvement from their previous encounters with Rovers. Earlier this season, Grimsby had suffered heavy defeats to Doncaster, losing by an aggregate score of 8-1 in two meetings.

Turning the Tide Against Doncaster

Grimsby’s win was secured through a well-taken goal by Justin Obikwu—his seventh of the season—and an own goal created by an impressive solo run from Jason Dadi Svanthorsson. Despite a late header from Doncaster’s Rob Street, Artell’s side held firm to take the victory.

“If ever there was a story of failing and then failing better, this was it. A year ago, we got absolutely walloped by Doncaster. Earlier this season, on the back of two really long away trips and a horrific injury crisis, we failed against Doncaster but failed a bit better.

“Today, we end up on the right side of it. That’s the progression made, and it’s the progress we’ve got to keep making. Doncaster are a really good team. They’re up there for a reason. But we’ve come here, and I thought we were worthy winners.”

Strong Defensive Performance Key to Victory

Artell highlighted his team’s defensive resilience, noting how Doncaster struggled to break through their backline. “For the last 15 minutes, they resorted to whacking it up because they couldn’t find a way through us,” he explained. “We played some magnificent stuff on the break as well, so all in all, it’s been a really pleasing day.”

The Mariners limited Doncaster to few clear-cut opportunities and looked more comfortable absorbing pressure than in previous meetings. While Artell acknowledged the tense finale, he remained confident that his team deserved the victory.

Attacking Quality and Tactical Work Paying Off

Despite Doncaster’s pressure late on, Grimsby made the most of their attacking opportunities. Obikwu continued his fine form in front of goal, while Svanthorsson’s confidence and skill were instrumental in forcing the second goal.

Artell praised the execution of the game plan, explaining: “We work on moves like that. It’s not a fluke that those things happen because we’ve worked on our build-up play, and it is always pleasing as a coaching staff to see it come out in the heat of battle.”

Writer’s View

Grimsby Town’s victory over Doncaster represents a significant step forward in their development under David Artell. Earlier in the season, they struggled against top teams, but their ability to go toe-to-toe with a promotion-chasing side and come out on top is a testament to their progress.
