Blackburn Rovers have confirmed that attacking midfielder Arnor Sigurdsson has left the club by mutual consent.
The 25-year-old has been the subject of much speculation throughout much of the season. After joining the club on loan in the summer of 2023, the deal was made permanent just six months later. He contributed seven goals and four assists in all competitions before injury hit towards the end of the campaign.
This season has also been blighted by injuries. The Iceland international had played just 57 minutes of Championship football, although did score in the 2-1 win over Oxford United in August.
With his contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign, Sigurdsson was the subject of much speculation throughout the January transfer window. He was linked with a number of clubs and was then left out of Blackburn’s 26-man squad for the remainder of the season.
Blackburn Issue Statement
Earlier today, Blackburn confirmed that Sigurdsson had been allowed to leave Ewood Park to continue his playing career elsewhere. In a statement released on their official website, the club said:
“Rovers have reached a mutual agreement with Arnor Sigurdsson to terminate his contract – a move which enables the attacker to continue his career with another club.
“The Iceland international arrived in East Lancashire on an initial loan deal from CSKA Moscow in the summer of 2023 before penning a permanent deal later that year.
“After an injury-hit start, Sigurdsson netter just nine minutes into his debut at Ipswich Town in September 2023, which was the first of four goals in his first five appearances for the club.
“Although the 25-year-old’s injury issues returned this term, there was still a big moment in 2024-25 for the wideman, who scored our memorable winner in the 2-1 victory against Oxford United back in August.
“In total, Arnor scored eight goals in 41 games during his stay in East Lancashire, with his last outing coming at Watford in October.
“Everyone at Rovers thanks Siggy for his efforts with us and wishes him all the very best in his future career.”
Writer’s View
This is a move that suits all parties. Sigurdsson is clearly a talented player but it was clear that his future laid elsewhere. With his contract set to expire in a matter of months, it makes sense to cut ties early to allow the player to fully regain fitness elsewhere. There’s no doubt that he is a player that would strengthen Blackburn’s play-off push, but the writing was on the wall as soon as he was excluded from their Championship squad last month.
