Colchester United manager Danny Cowley has expressed confidence in his current squad, describing it as the strongest he has overseen at the club.
Colchester’s form has been impressive in recent weeks, collecting 13 points from their last five League Two matches. This upturn in performances coincides with a successful January transfer window, where seven new players were brought in to bolster the squad.
Competition For Places
One of the most notable differences, according to Cowley, is the level of competition for places. With a larger and more balanced squad, the manager now has the luxury of making selection decisions that were previously unavailable to him.
“For the first time since I’ve been at the club, we’ll probably leave senior players behind this week, which we’ve never been in a position to be able to do.
“This is the strongest our squad has been and it’s the most competition for places that we’ve had.”
Cowley believes that this increased competition has already had a positive effect, not only in matches but also in training sessions. He explained that the battle for starting places is pushing players to improve every day, leading to a stronger overall unit.
“They’re each other’s best friends if they play in the same position because it’s ultimately the competition that drives the standards,” he said. “All we want individually and collectively is just to be better than yesterday.”

Points Target To Reach
The U’s currently sit in 11th place in the League Two standings, eight points away from the playoff spots. While promotion is not yet an immediate concern, Cowley has made it clear that the team’s first target is securing 50 points, which he believes will ensure their place in the division.
“The quicker we reach that total, the sooner we can set our next objective,” he added, emphasising a process-driven approach to maintaining momentum for the remainder of the season.
Colchester’s steady improvement is reflected in their recent results, and with their newfound strength in depth, they could yet play a significant role in the battle for promotion places. Their upcoming clash with Carlisle represents another opportunity to build on their progress.
Writer’s View
Colchester United’s revival under Cowley has been built on a clear structure and consistency in selection, something that the arrival of new signings has enhanced. With increased squad depth and a competitive atmosphere in training, the U’s look well-placed to push up the table.
