Bolton Wanderers have suffered a setback as striker Kion Etete has been ruled out for up to five weeks with a thigh injury, boss Steven Schumacher has confirmed.
The 23-year-old joined the Trotters on loan from Cardiff City in January to gain valuable game time but has made just one appearance since his arrival.
Etete’s Injury Frustration
Etete’s hopes of making an immediate impact at Bolton have been put on hold following a scan that confirmed a grade two thigh tear. Schumacher, speaking to The Bolton News, revealed the latest on the striker’s condition:
“It is bad news, he’s going to be out potentially for four to five weeks. The scan came back that he has a tear in his thigh. It’s disappointing for him because he was at a new club and wanted to show what he could do, but hopefully, we will have him back by the international break.
It is a grade two tear, so Matt (Barrass) thinks it will be four weeks before he’s back on the grass, but it isn’t a season-ending injury. We never thought he would be one to put straight into the team because he hasn’t played a lot of football.”

Bolton’s Striker Options
Etete was signed to bolster Bolton’s attacking options and provide additional depth up front. With the Cardiff loanee now sidelined, Schumacher will have to rely on his existing squad for firepower in the coming weeks.
The forward had not made an appearance for Cardiff in the first half of the season before making the temporary switch to the Toughsheet Community Stadium.
Etete’s Career Path
The striker arrived at Cardiff City in 2022, scoring eight goals in 58 appearances. However, with his contract set to expire in the summer, the Bluebirds will need to decide whether to offer him a new deal or allow him to move on.
Etete started his career at Notts County before being signed by Tottenham Hotspur in 2019. Though he never made a senior appearance for Spurs, he gained valuable EFL experience on loan at Northampton Town and Cheltenham Town.
Prior to his move to Bolton, Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town were also reportedly interested in securing his services.
Writer’s View
Etete’s injury is an untimely blow for both Bolton and the player himself, who was looking to revive his form with regular game time. While it is not a long-term setback, it does disrupt Schumacher’s attacking plans. The Trotters will need to navigate the next few weeks carefully, ensuring they remain in the promotion hunt while awaiting Etete’s return.
