Norwich City head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup remains optimistic about his side’s chances of securing a Championship play-off spot but insists that missing out would not be a failure.
The Canaries’ hopes of tightening their grip on the top six suffered a setback after consecutive home defeats to Derby County and Preston North End, sparking frustration among supporters. Despite the disappointing results, Thorup remains confident in his squad’s ability to compete at the upper end of the table.
Norwich Still in the Fight
Norwich finished in the play-off places last season under David Wagner but were heavily beaten by Leeds United, leading to significant changes at the club. Thorup was brought in as part of a longer-term project alongside sporting director Ben Knapper, aiming to rebuild the team with younger talent, a new playing style, and a shift in culture.
Following the midweek defeat, the Danish coach explained why he remains optimistic despite the recent setbacks.
“Where we are as a team, there are no easy games, and we have to fight very, very hard for all the points that we get.
“When we are at our best, it’s realistic to say that we can push for the playoffs, but it’s also realistic to say that it’s not much we have to drop from our top level before all the games that we play are even games or very, very hard games for us – and that will be the case for the rest of the season.
“I’m still positive and optimistic that we can push for the playoffs. But I’m also realistic in saying that if we don’t, it’s probably not a failure for us this season.”

Managing Expectations
Thorup pointed to the pre-season expectations placed on his side, noting that few people backed them for a top-six finish before the campaign began.
“I also remember back to when I saw the odds at the beginning of the season that no one really had us in the top six.
“We have to remember that and not be carried away by good results and not be too frustrated by some bad results, but just accept that that’s where we are and do everything we can to improve and be better the next game.”
Writer’s View
Thorup’s pragmatic approach to Norwich’s play-off aspirations is both refreshing and realistic. While fans may be frustrated with recent slip-ups, the club is undergoing a transition that was never going to deliver instant success. A play-off finish remains within reach, but the bigger picture is about building a sustainable project under Thorup.
