Plymouth Argyle head coach Miron Muslic admitted he was left “speechless” after guiding his side to a stunning 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth round at Home Park.
In just his sixth game in charge, the Austrian tactician masterminded one of the biggest upsets in recent FA Cup history as the Championship strugglers overcame the Premier League leaders thanks to a second-half penalty from Ryan Hardie.
‘Biggest moment’ of Muslic’s career
Hardie’s 54th-minute penalty proved the difference in a match where Argyle delivered a resilient defensive masterclass, limiting Liverpool to minimal chances.
Speaking after the match, Muslic reflected on the scale of the achievement but emphasised that the true defining moment for him would be securing Argyle’s league status at the end of the season.
“Normally I’m very, very good with my words and eloquent, but I’m a little bit speechless to be fair,” said Muslic.
“Very emotional because I realise the task today, I realise the opponent, I realise it’s the FA Cup, it’s the biggest, most famous cup in the world. We played Liverpool, so it was just omnipresent and very, very big in the city, in the club, in our locker room. We just wanted to represent Argyle in the best possible way.”
“This is the biggest moment so far in my coaching career, no doubt. But the biggest moment is yet to come—at the end of the season, when we are staying up.”

From Burnley collapse to FA Cup triumph
Argyle’s remarkable resurgence comes just weeks after they trailed Burnley 5-0 at half-time in a Championship fixture at Home Park. Since then, they have taken four points from their last two league matches before sealing this historic FA Cup win.
Muslic believes the turnaround started at half-time during that Burnley game, where he encouraged his players to show courage despite the scoreline.
“We followed it just a couple of days later in Sunderland, a week later against West Brom, and now against Liverpool. This gives us not only belief but also confidence,” he said.
Defensive resilience earns famous victory
Argyle’s disciplined defensive structure nullified Liverpool’s attacking threats, restricting them to long-range efforts and hopeful crosses in the final moments. Muslic was particularly impressed with the resilience of his backline.
“Part of the plan was to keep a very good defensive structure. We knew it’s Liverpool and we would have a lot of moments when we have to defend. But we had to enjoy defending, and I think we just did that,” he said.
Writer’s view
Argyle’s victory over Liverpool will be remembered as one of the greatest nights in the club’s history. Muslic’s side executed a perfect game plan, staying disciplined at the back while seizing their key moment in attack. While this FA Cup triumph will be celebrated for years to come, the real battle lies ahead in the Championship.
