Our Three Predictions for Southampton vs Burnley

  • First Prediction: Under 2.5 goals to be scored – 33/50
  • Second Prediction: Result to end in a draw after 90 minutes – 5/2
  • Third Prediction: Both teams to score – no – 18/25

First Prediction for Southampton vs Burnley – Under 2.5 goals to be scored – 33/50

This is a match-up between two sides who are similar in ability, yet have had contrasting seasons. Whilst Southampton are struggling in the Premier League, recently-relegated Burnley are flying in the Championship as they look to bounce back from the disappointment of relegation. For the visitors, the reason they have been so hard to beat is their commendable defensive record. Scott Parker’s side have played 31 games, yet only conceded nine goals, keeping 22 clean sheets in the process. However, they don’t have the best goalscoring record either, scoring 37 goals, with midfielder Josh Brownhill acting as their top-scorer with 11 of these goals. The opposite can be said for the Saints, who have leaked goals but also not scored many. They currently have a goal difference of -36 in the league and have conceded 54 goals in just 24 matches. With both teams’ poor scoring records, aligned with Burnley’s record-breaking defence, it’s fair to say this game won’t be a goal fest.

Second Prediction for Southampton vs Burnley – Result to end in a draw after 90 minutes – 5/2

For the reasons listed above, it’s also hard to predict what team are going to win and this is further assisted by the fact that FA Cup replays no longer exist. This means that if the result is level after 90 minutes, the sides will have to play extra time and if the score is still level after extra time, the game will go to penalties. It is almost impossible to predict the way that this game could go and after Southampton’s win on Saturday, who knows what could happen. If there is one thing possible to predict based on stats, however, it’s that this match will likely be a low-scoring, tight affair between two sides looking to advance to the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Third Prediction for Southampton vs Burnley – Both teams to score – no – 18/25

As previously mentioned, this match is unlikely to be a goal fest based on both teams’ defensive and attacking stats. The hosts have failed to score on eight occasions this season in the league. The Clarets have an even worse record and have failed to score on 11 occasions in the Championship. Considering Parker’s side are fighting for automatic promotion, this is extremely poor. Although their solid defensive record certainly makes up for it. If Southampton were to break Burnley’s defensive duck, it would certainly be against the odds. The away side are also without their top scorer and threat Brownhill, who is likely to miss this game after missing the last two due to injury.

Full Preview of the Game – Last Results and Head-To-Head

As mentioned above, both teams come into this game in really contrasting form. Ivan Juric’s side have won just two of their last five, with only one of those wins coming in the league against fellow strugglers Ipswich Town last weekend. That was just their second league win of the season, whilst Burnley’s victory against Oxford United on Tuesday night was their 16th win of the season.

Although the hosts are in a league above, they are struggling in the top-flight and are sat bottom of the league with just nine points. Burnley, on the other hand, are experiencing a good season back in the second tier, and currently find themselves second in the automatic promotion spots, two points behind league-leaders Leeds United. A tightly contested match is anticipated with a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup up for grabs.

Since 2011, these sides have met 17 times in numerous competitions, including both the Premier League and Championship. The most recent meeting was in 2022, where Burnley won 2-0. Out of these 17 ties played, the two teams have won the same amount, winning six each, with the other five games ending level.
