Bradford City Shoot Down Millers To Book Semi-Final Spot

Bradford City secured their place in the EFL Trophy semi-finals with a determined 1-0 victory over Rotherham United at the New York Stadium.

Bantams Show Greater Desire

Cup football often comes down to which side wants it more, and Bradford showed greater hunger on the night. A second-half penalty from Richie Smallwood proved decisive, as the League Two side overcame their League One opponents to move within one win of Wembley.

Rotherham had the better of the first half, controlling possession and creating half-chances, but Bradford weathered the pressure and grew in confidence as the game progressed. The Bantams had two penalty appeals turned down in the opening 10 minutes, but when Reece James brought down Brad Halliday in the second half, referee Adam Herczeg pointed to the spot.

Smallwood stepped up and fired his penalty into the roof of the net, giving the visitors a crucial lead. It was a deserved breakthrough after a more aggressive second-half display from Bradford.

Key Moments

Rotherham had early opportunities, with Hakeem Odoffin’s volley testing Sam Walker, while Louie Sibley’s driving runs caused problems. However, their dominance in possession did not translate into clear-cut chances, and Bradford took advantage.

Alexander made a statement at half-time, bringing on Antoni Sarcevic and Jamie Walker, the latter replacing Alex Pattison in a tactical switch that underlined the visitors’ intent. Bradford grew into the game, with Bobby Pointon and Tyreik Wright combining well to create chances.

The home side pushed forward late on, but they lacked the cutting edge to find an equaliser. Even when goalkeeper Cameron Dawson ventured up for a stoppage-time free-kick, a foul in the box ended their hopes of forcing penalties.

Rotherham Left to Regret Lack of Urgency

With fewer than 2,000 home fans in attendance from a crowd of just over 3,000, Rotherham’s approach reflected the muted atmosphere. The defeat will feel like an inconvenience rather than a major blow, but the Millers may think differently if they see Bradford celebrating a trip to Wembley.

Writer’s View

Bradford’s victory was built on discipline and desire. Rotherham dominated early on but failed to capitalise, and once the Bantams sensed vulnerability, they took control. Now just one game from Wembley, Bradford will believe they can go all the way, while Rotherham are left to reflect on a missed opportunity.
