Shrewsbury Town are closing in on the loan signing of Vadaine Oliver from Bradford City as they look to bolster their attacking options in a bid to escape the League One relegation zone, according to journalist Alan Nixon.
The 33-year-old striker has been given the green light to finalise his move, with the deal expected to run until the end of the season.
Shrewsbury Turn to Oliver for Firepower
With just 28 goals in 28 league matches this season, Shrewsbury are among the lowest scorers in the division. Manager Gareth Ainsworth is keen to bring in a proven forward to help his side’s survival bid.
Oliver, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Stevenage, made 14 appearances but failed to find the back of the net. However, his vast experience in the EFL makes him an attractive option for Shrewsbury, as does his robust approach, which suits the straightforward tactics of Salop gaffer Ainsworth.

Oliver’s Career Journey
Oliver began his career in the youth ranks of Sheffield Wednesday before making a name for himself at Lincoln City, where he scored 13 goals in the 2012–13 season. His form earned him a move to Crewe Alexandra, followed by spells at York City, Notts County, Morecambe, and Northampton Town. While with the Minstermen, he won the FA Trophy but couldn’t stop them sliding into the National League North.
His breakthrough came at Gillingham, where he hit 20 goals in the 2020–21 season, earning the League One Player of the Month award in March 2021. He followed that up by finishing as Gillingham’s top scorer the next season, though he was unable to prevent their relegation to League Two.
In July 2022, Oliver joined Bradford City on a three-year deal but has struggled for consistency. With his contract set to expire in the summer, this move could provide him with one final opportunity to impress at League One level.
Shrewsbury’s Transfer Window Activity
The Shrews remain active in the final days of the transfer window, with Ainsworth keen to make additional reinforcements. While outgoings remain unlikely, further incomings could strengthen the squad for the remainder of the campaign.
With time running out before the transfer deadline, securing Oliver’s loan move will be a crucial step for Shrewsbury’s battle against the drop.
Writer’s View
Shrewsbury’s move for Oliver is a logical one, given their attacking struggles this season. While his recent goal return has been modest, his experience and physical presence could be invaluable in a relegation battle. If he can rediscover his form from his Gillingham days, this signing could be a turning point in Shrewsbury’s fight for survival.
