Tranmere Rovers manager Nigel Adkins has called for unity ahead of what is set to be an exceptionally important few months for the club.
The Birkenhead-based club are fighting for their lives towards the bottom of League Two, with Adkins bearing the brunt of much criticism from supporters. Adkins represented the club as a player in the 1980s and returned to the Wirral as manager in 2023.
He ultimately helped steer Rovers away from the bottom two to secure a 16th-placed finish last season, but they have once again found themselves in a scrap for survival. Although they are yet to drop into the relegation zone this season, they do find themselves in 22nd having won just two of their last 13 league fixtures.
They face a tricky task against a tough to beat Colchester United tomorrow with a five-point cushion over Carlisle United but with the Cumbrians showing signs of a revival, they know they need to start winning games.
Adkins Gives Honest Assessment
Adkins isn’t shirking away from the fact that his team are in a relegation fight. However, he has called for a togetherness to help get them over the line come May. Speaking to Wirral Globe, the ex-Hull City boss said:
“We’re in a scrap but we have to stay up and it’s so easy to throw away little comments and be negative and not bring the best of you and everyone has to stick together.”
Continuing, he admitted that there are no hiding places:
“We are in a relegation battle and it’s tough and there’s no hiding away from it but I’m not hiding away from it.
“We have to be a team together and a football club together because we have to get through this situation and come the end of the season we are in a viable position to keep moving this football club forward.”
Writer’s View
With Carlisle’s recent transfer business, many people are predicting Tranmere to suffer the drop into the National League. The five-point cushion they hold at the moment gives them a little bit of breathing space and they’ll also be looking at the teams directly above them. For example, Newport seem to be in freefall at the moment whilst Harrogate and Accrington Stanley are only three points better off. It’s going to be some battle at the bottom of League Two.
