Wigan Athletic Eye Former Bolton Wanderers Prospect

Wigan Athletic are looking to sign Crawley Town midfielder Ronan Darcy before the January transfer window closes, according to Wigan Today.

The Latics are keen to bring the 24-year-old playmaker back to the North West as they seek reinforcements following the departure of Thelo Aasgaard to Luton Town. With the deadline fast approaching, Wigan will need to act quickly to get a deal over the line.

Wigan’s Interest in Darcy

Darcy has been a key player for Crawley this season, making 25 appearances across all competitions, including 21 in League One. The midfielder has contributed two goals and six assists as Crawley look to consolidate their place in the third tier following promotion last season.

However, with his contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign, Crawley could be forced to sell in January rather than risk losing him for free in the summer.

“Obviously your best player is always going to get attention, especially stepping up a level. Darcy has been brilliant but from my point of view, Darcy’s part of the squad and hopefully over this two-week break we might be able to see him back involved in some capacity for the next game.” – Rob Elliot (Crawley Town manager)

The Red Devils may struggle to keep hold of him if Wigan make a firm offer in the coming days.

Darcy’s Career So Far

Darcy started his career at Bolton Wanderers, progressing through the academy system and making 35 first-team appearances, scoring twice. To gain further experience, he had loan spells at Skelmersdale United, Norwegian side Sogndal, and Scottish club Queen’s Park.

In 2022, he joined Swindon Town permanently, spending a season with the Robins before moving to Crawley Town in 2023. His performances were instrumental in Crawley’s promotion from League Two last season, where he scored six goals to help them secure a place in League One.

Why Wigan Could Be the Right Fit

Wigan’s interest in Darcy is understandable given their need for a creative midfielder to replace Aasgaard. A move to the DW Stadium would also bring him back to the North West, closer to his roots.

With first-team opportunities likely, Darcy could see this as a step up in his career while helping Wigan push for a strong finish in League One. Whether Crawley will allow him to leave remains to be seen, but with his contract running down, they may decide to cash in while they still can.

Writer’s View

Darcy has established himself as a creative force at Crawley, but a move to Wigan could be the perfect next step. With Aasgaard departing, the Latics need fresh attacking options, and Darcy fits the bill. If Wigan can agree terms, this could be a smart signing that benefits both parties, but they must move quickly to finalise the deal before the deadline.
