Watford are reportedly eyeing a move for Trabzonspor striker Denis Dragus before the January transfer window closes.
According to Turkish news outlet Fanatik, the Hornets are keen to bolster their attacking options with the Romania international.
Struggles in Turkey
Dragus, 28, has struggled to find form this season, scoring just two goals in 19 appearances for the Turkish Super Lig side. Despite his recent difficulties, he remains under contract at Trabzonspor until the summer of 2028. His performances last season, which included 15 goals in 35 outings while on loan at Gaziantep, earned him a permanent move to Trabzonspor, but his future now appears uncertain.
Watford are said to view Dragus as a potential asset to add competition to their striking department as they push for a play-off spot. Currently sitting 8th in the Championship table, the Hornets are outside the top six only on goal difference following a 2-0 victory over Derby County last weekend.

International and Club Career
Dragus has represented Romania 20 times at the senior level and boasts a varied club career. After starting out at Viitorul Constanța, he moved to Standard Liège in 2019, where he scored 11 goals in 61 matches. During his time in Belgium, he had loan spells at Crotone, Genoa, and Gaziantep, with the latter proving particularly fruitful.
At Gaziantep, Dragus enjoyed a breakout campaign, notching 15 goals and solidifying his reputation as a reliable scorer. However, his form has dipped since joining Trabzonspor, raising questions about his long-term future at the club.
Watford’s Play-off Push
Watford have already made moves in the January window, bringing in defender James Abankwah on loan from Udinese. The addition of Dragus could provide manager Valérien Ismaël with another option up front as the Hornets look to cement a place in the Championship play-offs during the second half of the season.
Writer’s View
Denis Dragus could be a high-reward gamble for Watford. While his recent form in Turkey has been underwhelming, his performances at Gaziantep and his international experience with Romania demonstrate his potential. At 28, Dragus is at an age where he can combine experience with the physical demands of the Championship, but his confidence and sharpness in front of goal will need to return quickly.
For Watford, the move aligns with their ambition to secure promotion. Dragus’s versatility and proven goal-scoring ability in the right circumstances could add valuable depth to their attack, especially in a league as competitive as the Championship. However, they must weigh the risks of his recent struggles against the potential upside he brings to their promotion push.
