Lincoln City Linked With Veteran Striker Swoop

Lincoln City are reportedly close to securing the services of 34-year-old striker James Collins from Derby County.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has indicated that talks are at an advanced stage, with the Imps looking to add firepower to their forward line.

Collins on the Fringe at Derby

Collins, who played a pivotal role in Derby’s promotion from League One last season with 19 goals, has struggled for game time in the Championship. Despite making 17 appearances this campaign, only one has been as a starter. With his opportunities limited at Pride Park, a move to Lincoln could provide him with a fresh challenge and allow him to showcase the experience and consistency that have defined his career.

A Proven Goal Scorer

Starting his career at Aston Villa, Collins had loan spells at clubs including Darlington, where he displaced Lee Thorpe to secure a starting role. From there, he built a reputation as a reliable goal scorer during stints with Shrewsbury Town, Hibernian, and Northampton Town. His standout performances at Crawley Town, where he scored 22 goals in the 2016–17 season, earned him a move to Luton Town.

At Luton, Collins became a key figure, helping the club achieve back-to-back promotions. He scored 19 goals in their League Two promotion season and followed up with 25 goals as they clinched the League One title. His form made him one of the most feared strikers in the lower leagues.

Since joining Derby County, Collins has netted 31 goals in 98 appearances, including 25 in 80 League One games. However, his opportunities have diminished since the club’s rise to the Championship, opening the door for a potential move to Lincoln City.

A Perfect Fit for Lincoln?

Collins’s profile aligns well with what Lincoln City appear to be seeking – an experienced, reliable centre-forward to bolster their attacking options. Although his age may raise some questions, his proven track record at League One and Two levels suggests he could be a valuable addition to the squad.

Bringing in Collins could also benefit Lincoln’s younger forwards, such as Freddie Draper, who could learn from the veteran striker’s wealth of experience. Draper’s development may even accelerate by observing and working alongside a player who has consistently delivered at this level and beyond.

Writer’s View

If Lincoln City finalise this deal, it could be a shrewd move to strengthen their attack. James Collins’s ability to perform under pressure and score vital goals makes him an asset for any League One side. While there is always a risk with players in their mid-30s, his consistent form in recent years suggests he still has plenty to offer.
