Leeds United and Sunderland To Battle For 21-Year-Old Talent

Leeds United and Sunderland are two of the clubs locked in a battle to secure the signature of Oxford United’s rising star Tyler Goodrham.

They’re not the only Championship sides hoping to raid Oxford: Coventry City and Swansea City are also interested, according to Football Insider.

A Rising Star in the EFL

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in the English Football League. This season, Goodrham has been a standout performer for Oxford United in the Championship, contributing seven goals and assists in 28 appearances.

Goodrham’s journey began in Oxford’s academy, where he quickly ascended to the first team. His breakthrough came during the club’s promotion-winning League One campaign last season, where he made 51 appearances, scored 10 goals, and provided five assists. This success has earned him interest from top EFL clubs, including Leeds and Swansea, who are eyeing him for their promotion pushes.

Goodrham’s Current Impact

Since stepping up to the Championship, Goodrham has continued to impress with his creativity and goal-scoring ability. However, Oxford face an uphill battle to retain their prized asset. Losing him could be a significant setback as Gary Rowett’s side, currently 17th in the league, looks to solidify their position away from the relegation zone.

The club’s hierarchy has backed Rowett with new signings, including Ole Romeny and Alex Matos, and discussions with Burnley for defender Hannes Delcroix are ongoing. However, Goodrham’s potential departure would leave a substantial void in the team’s midfield.

Goodrham’s talent has not gone unnoticed outside the Championship. As a Republic of Ireland international, he has shown his ability to perform on a bigger stage. A move to a club like Leeds or Sunderland, both with strong promotion aspirations, might prove too enticing for the young midfielder to resist.

Writer’s View

Goodrham’s rise through the ranks at Oxford United underscores his potential as one of the EFL’s finest young talents. While his departure would be a blow to Oxford, a move to a larger club could accelerate his development. Whichever team secures him will gain a creative and hard-working asset capable of making an immediate impact.
