Blackburn Rovers Blow Portsmouth Away With Second Half Treble

Blackburn Rovers reignited their promotion charge with a commanding 3-0 victory over struggling Portsmouth at Ewood Park.

The win, Blackburn’s first in six games, lifts them into the Championship playoff positions, while Pompey remain mired in relegation trouble.

Second-Half Surge Secures the Points

After a cagey first half that ended goalless, Rovers came alive in the second period with a clinical display. The breakthrough came on the hour mark as Makhtar Gueye headed home Callum Brittain’s pinpoint cross. Gueye, introduced as a substitute, made an immediate impact with his aerial presence and intelligent positioning.

Minutes later, Blackburn doubled their advantage through Brittain, who finished emphatically at the near post after a clever dummy by Amario Cozier-Duberry. The game was put beyond doubt when Andi Weimann capitalised on a rebound to score Blackburn’s third, following a save from Pompey keeper Nico Schmid.

The result provides much-needed momentum for John Eustace’s side as they aim to consolidate their position in the top six.

Portsmouth’s Travel Troubles Deepen

Portsmouth’s dismal away form continued, with this defeat marking their ninth loss on the road this season. While they showed glimpses of promise, including a close-range effort from Colby Bishop that hit the crossbar, they struggled to convert chances into goals.

Their defensive vulnerabilities were exposed during Blackburn’s second-half onslaught, leaving manager John Mousinho frustrated with his team’s inability to stay in contention.

“Makhtar Gueye has changed the game since he has come on, and if he can do that in a 90-minute match, you won’t be looking for anyone else in the transfer window,” said former Blackburn midfielder Mark Atkins on BBC Radio Lancashire.

Pompey’s failure to pick up points leaves them 23rd in the table, level on points with Hull City but below them on goal difference. With just one win away from home this season, Mousinho has a tough task ahead to steer his side clear of the drop zone.

Writer’s View

This was a vital win for Blackburn, who rediscovered their cutting edge just when it mattered most. Gueye’s introduction was pivotal, and Eustace deserves credit for his game-changing substitutions. For Portsmouth, their inability to secure results on the road is a growing concern. Mousinho must urgently address both their defensive frailties and lack of goals if they are to avoid relegation. The contrasting fortunes of these two clubs were evident, with Blackburn looking forward to a potential playoff campaign and Pompey facing a fight for survival.
