Wigan Athletic Launch Pursuit Of League Two Captain

Wigan Athletic have lodged a bid for Fleetwood Town‘s Brendan Wiredu according to a report from Pete O’Rourke.

The Cod Army defender has played 16 times for his side this season, with a two-month absence due to an injury, finally returning to the side in their Boxing Day win over Chesterfield.

Latics Submit Offer

According to Pete O’Rourke, Wigan have submitted a bid for Wiredu as Shaun Maloney’s side look to bolster what is already one of the best defences in League One. They have conceded 23 times so far, only bested by a handful of third-tier sides.

It is not the first time higher division clubs have come calling for the 25-year-old, with links over the summer to multiple Championship sides including Derby County, Oxford United and Plymouth Argyle. It was also rumoured that Wigan’s arch-rivals in Bolton Wanderers also were interested in signing Wiredu.

His deal at Highbury expires at the end of the season, and with him not eligible for any compensation fee should he sign for another club as a free agent, it may contribute into Pete Wild’s side making a decision this window. He was signed for an undisclosed fee in 2022 from Colchester United.

Fleetwood are 16th in League Two at it’s halfway point, and face Gillingham in League Two action as other teams face the FA Cup Third Round, including the Latics, who face Mansfield Town.

Writer’s View

It is an interesting transfer for Wigan Athletic to make should this report be believed. They have been defensively strong throughout this campaign and Will Aimson and Jason Kerr have been very reliable options. The depth however is where this transfer makes sense, with Paul Dummett somewhat struggling in his limited appearances so far and James Carragher not being given a heap of minutes this season. Wiredu would be a very good player to bring in but his arrival may break apart what has been a brilliant defensive partnership so far.
