Full Preview Of The Game: Last Results And Head-To-Head:
Southampton welcome Swansea City to St. Mary’s in the midst of a truly awful run of form and with Premier League relegation seeming almost confirmed. The Saints, who recently sacked promotion winning boss Russell Martin, have not won a league match in 11 attempts and are 12 matches without a win in all competitions. Croat Ivan Juric has taken charge of three matches since his appointment, losing all three including a 5-0 hammering to Brentford last time out.
The Saints have won just once in the Premier League all season and have lost 16 of their 20 matches. They score 0.6 goals per game on average, concede 2.2 goals per game and have allowed the second most goals against in the entire division.
Championship outfit Swansea City head to Southampton believing they have a serious chance of knocking their Premier League opponents out of the cup. Luke William’s side have lost three of their 10 games, winning four and suffering defeat three times. The Swans find themselves six points off the playoff places with 34 points from their 26 games. Last time out, a last gasp Joe Allen strike rescued a point against playoff hopefuls West Bromwich Albion.
Top scorer Liam Cullen has scored eight goals so far this season and has five goals in his last nine outings and he will be hopeful leading assist maker Ronald Pereira can add to his six key contributions, adding to assists against West Brom and Queens Park Rangers in his last four matches.
Southampton have won 10 and drawn three of the previous 15 meetings between these two sides and are unbeaten in the last five competitive meetings. Last season saw the two competing in the Championship and a comprehensive double for the Saints. On Boxing Day, the Saints ran out 5-0 winners at St. Mary’s with Ryan Fraser impressing with two goals. Joe Aribo opened the scoring inside 20 minutes before Samuel Edozie doubled their lead just after half time. Fraser then struck in the 74th and 87th minutes before Che Adams rounded off the goal fest in the 93rd minute.
Adams picked up where he left off a month later in the return fixture at the Swansea.com Stadium, giving Southampton the lead after just six minutes. It was two just 15 minutes later thanks to Will Smallbone before Jamie Paterson pulled on back for the Swans just before half time. Flynn Downes made sure of the points right on the half time whistle, making the score 3-1 and adding three vital points to the promotion push.
The last time Swansea tasted victory in this fixture was back in 2017 when both clubs were in the Premier League. Gylfi Sigurdsson was pulling the strings for the Swans and he assisted defender Alfie Mawson to give Swansea the lead in the 38th minute. Republic of Ireland international Shane Long equalised just before the hour before Sigurdsson secured the three points with 20 minutes to go.
