Blackpool Linked With Move For 10-Goal Attacker

Blackpool have reportedly submitted a bid for Chesterfield winger James Berry as they look to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old, who has been with Chesterfield since 2023, has attracted interest from several clubs, including Blackburn Rovers and Swansea City, earlier this season.

A Productive Season for Berry

Berry has enjoyed a strong campaign in League Two, scoring 10 goals and providing three assists in 27 appearances across all competitions. His form has been crucial for Chesterfield, who currently sit 10th in the League Two table in their first season back in the EFL after winning the National League last year.

Last season, Berry found the net six times in 33 outings during Chesterfield’s title-winning campaign under manager Paul Cook. This season, he has emerged as a consistent attacking threat, catching the attention of clubs higher up the football pyramid.

Blackpool’s Struggles in Wide Areas

Blackpool manager Steve Bruce is keen to bolster his attacking options, particularly in the wide areas, following the departures of Elliot Embleton and Dom Ballard earlier this month. Limited options beyond Rob Apter and CJ Hamilton have highlighted the need for reinforcements, and Berry is seen as a player who can bring both creativity and goals to the Seasiders.

The former Liverpool academy player began his professional career at Hull City, making his senior debut before moving on to Macclesfield Town, where he enjoyed regular football. His performances there earned him a move to Chesterfield, where he has continued to develop his game.

Potential Transfer and Contract Situation

Berry is under contract with Chesterfield until 2026, but the League Two side could be tempted to cash in on him amid Blackpool’s interest. The Seasiders, currently 15th in League One, are eager to turn their mixed first-half season around. With seven wins, nine draws, and eight defeats so far, Bruce’s team will need reinforcements to climb the table.

If the transfer is successful, Berry will have the opportunity to step up from League Two and make an impact in League One. Blackpool fans will hope his proven ability in the final third can inject much-needed dynamism into their side as they look to improve their fortunes in the second half of the season.

Writer’s View

James Berry represents a smart signing for Blackpool. His productive season with Chesterfield demonstrates his readiness to step up to League One. With Blackpool struggling for consistency and lacking depth in wide positions, Berry’s arrival could provide the creativity and finishing touch that Steve Bruce’s side desperately needs.
