Leyton Orient Send Midfielder To Relegation Battle

George Moncur, a former Barnsley, Hull City, and Luton Town midfielder, has been recalled from his loan spell at Southend United by Leyton Orient and sent to Ebbsfleet United for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.

The move sees the 31-year-old thrust into a relegation fight with the National League’s bottom-placed side.

Career Journey

Moncur began his career in the academies of Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United, making two senior appearances for the Hammers. He gained early first-team experience through loan spells with AFC Wimbledon, Partick Thistle, and Colchester United before signing permanently with the latter in November 2014. His time at Colchester was productive, with the midfielder scoring 23 goals in 97 appearances across two spells.

His performances earned him a move to Barnsley in 2016, where he spent two and a half seasons and made a loan switch to Peterborough United. Moncur later played for Luton Town, Hull City, and eventually Leyton Orient, where he became a key figure before slipping down the pecking order. His move to Ebbsfleet marks his first foray into non-league football.

Challenges Ahead

Moncur’s first half of the season at Southend United saw him feature 13 times in the National League and once in the FA Cup. Now, at Ebbsfleet, he faces the daunting task of helping the club claw their way out of relegation. Currently sitting 24th in the table, Ebbsfleet hope Moncur’s experience can make an immediate impact, starting with their next match against Boston United.

“George Moncur has joined Ebbsfleet United on loan for the remainder of the 2024/25 season. Everyone at Leyton Orient wishes George the best of luck during his time at Ebbsfleet,” read a statement from Leyton Orient.

A Storied Career

The son of former West Ham midfielder John Moncur, George’s career has been defined by adaptability and determination. From the Premier League to the National League, his journey reflects the highs and lows of professional football. His wealth of experience will be crucial as Ebbsfleet United fight to maintain their league status.
