New Northampton Town signing Liam Shaw has revealed the chance to work with Kevin Nolan was the driving force behind his switch to Sixfields.
The 23-year-old only joined Fleetwood Town in October following his release from Scottish giants Celtic in the summer. Having signed a one-year deal, he made his debut against Newport County, coming on as a late substitute.
The midfielder made 14 appearances in all competitions for the Cod Army, but his time at the Highbury Stadium came to a premature end last week when Northampton met his release clause. Shaw signed a two-and-a-half year deal and started the 1-0 win over Burton Albion just a day later.
It was the Cobblers first win since beating Peterborough United in early December and the first of Nolan’s tenure. The result moved them up to 18th, six points above the relegation places.
Shaw Revels At Chance To Work With Nolan
The former Wigan Athletic loanee has revealed that the opportunity to work with Nolan, who played in the Premier League with Bolton Wanderers, was the main factor behind his early exit from Fleetwood. Speaking to The Northampton Chronicle & Echo, he said:
“It’s happened really quickly but I’m happy to be here and I’m looking forward to the challenge,” said Shaw, who made his debut in the win at Burton. “It always feels nice to be wanted and that gives you confidence as a player when you go out onto the pitch.
“I spoke to the manager before I signed and he said he liked the way I play and I’m just excited to work under him and learn from him. He’s played at the highest level and he has a lot of experience so I think I can develop under him. I’ll get my head down, work hard and do my best for the team.”

This is a deal which Northampton got over the line quickly. It clearly signals their ambitions for the remainder of the campaign as they look to put themselves in a more comfortable position in League One. It’s likely that Shaw will be one of a number of arrivals at Sixfields this month as Nolan looks to put his stamp on the squad he inherited from Jon Brady last month.
