Lincoln City Make Important Contract Decision

Lincoln City have handed defender Tendayi Darikwa a contract extension until 2027 after impressing since his arrival last summer.

The 33-year-old returned to England with the Imps after spending the 2023/24 season in Cyprus with Apollon Limassol. He arrived at the LNER Stadium in July on a one-year deal, with the option of an additional 12 months.

It’s proven to be a shrewd piece of business by the League One outfit. Darikwa has been an ever-present under Michael Skubala, with the only league game he has missed thus far coming in the way of a one-game suspension in December.

The former Wigan Athletic star has mainly been deployed in a right wing-back role and scored on his debut in a 3-2 win over Burton Albion in August. He has since contributed two further goals and three assists, with Lincoln making the decision to extend his current terms earlier today.

Skubala ‘Delighted’ With Fresh Agreement

Darikwa has been a popular figure at Sincil Bank this season. He becomes the second defender in as many weeks to agree a contract extension after Lewis Montsma agreed fresh terms last week.

Head coach Michael Skubala has revealed his delight after the news was announced, telling official club media:

“Tendayi is a an exemplary professional, massively impacting the group with his leadership on and off the pitch since he joined us last summer.

“Tendayi has performed to a high level in his favoured position and also helped the team by filling in at centre back when required. He trains every day, is available every game, sets standards in everything he does and is a brilliant influence on our young players. We are delighted to have formalised his contract with us for the next 18 months so that all parties have certainty for next season.”

Writer’s View

This is excellent news for Lincoln City. Darikwa has been one of the club’s standout performers this season and it’s no surprise to see him rewarded for that with a longer term deal. His experience at this level has been and will continue to be a huge bonus for the Imps, who still harbour ambitions of reaching the play-offs this season. Their recent form means that it is a slim hope, but having a player such as Darikwa in their squad will certainly boost their chances.
