Championship contenders Sheffield United are exploring the possibility of re-signing Ben Brereton Diaz from Southampton, according to reports from Sky Sports.
The Chilean forward, who previously had a productive loan spell at Bramall Lane, could return as the Blades push for promotion back to the Premier League.
Productive Loan Spell at Bramall Lane
Brereton Diaz made an immediate impact during his loan stint with Sheffield United last season while they were still in the Premier League. The Nottingham Forest academy graduate contributed six goals and one assist in 14 appearances, proving his value despite the club’s eventual relegation. His performances sparked interest in a permanent deal, but the player returned to his parent club Villarreal at the season’s end.
Subsequently, Brereton Diaz secured a permanent transfer to Southampton in the summer. However, his time with the Saints has been underwhelming, with the forward yet to find the net this season. Southampton’s struggles in the Premier League, where they sit bottom of the table with only six points, have added to the player’s woes.
Blades Target Reinforcements
Sheffield United view Brereton Diaz as a key addition who could bolster their attacking options. Manager Chris Wilder, keen to strengthen his squad, is also targeting a left-sided attacker and a central midfielder to support their promotion campaign. The club remains optimistic about securing the return of Brereton Diaz, whose familiarity with the team and proven record make him a prime candidate.
“Sheffield United are interested in a return to the club for Ben Brereton Diaz. He scored six in 14 games during his loan last season, but opted for a move to Southampton. With the Saints struggling and the player yet to score, a move back to the Blades could benefit both parties,” reports Sky Sports’ Lyall Thomas.
Additionally, Sheffield United are monitoring Chelsea’s stance on recalling Alfie Gilchrist, whose performances have impressed during his loan spell. Keeping the talented defender would further solidify their ambitions for automatic promotion.
Writer’s View
Reuniting with Brereton Diaz could be a masterstroke for Sheffield United as they aim to secure a Premier League return. His familiarity with the squad and ability to deliver in crucial moments make him an attractive prospect. For Southampton, offloading the forward might provide an opportunity to restructure their squad and regain stability in the second half of the season.
