Stoke City are reportedly targeting former Coventry City manager Mark Robins as their top choice to replace Narcis Pelach, who was sacked after just 19 matches in charge.
Robins, a seasoned Championship figure, has emerged as the early favourite, with bookmakers placing him at 3/1 to take the reins at the Bet365 Stadium. However, the Potters could face competition for the former Manchester United player, as he is also thought to be on the radar of West Brom, who lost their manager over the festive period.
Stoke City Fire Pelach
Pelach’s dismissal, announced following Stoke’s Boxing Day 2-0 defeat to Leeds United, leaves the club searching for their third manager of the season. With the Potters languishing just above the relegation zone, sporting director Jon Walters has vowed to find the right candidate to stabilise the team.
Robins, 55, is an attractive option due to his extensive experience and proven track record. His seven-and-a-half-year tenure at Coventry City was marked by significant success, including promotion to the Championship and a subsequent push for Premier League contention. However, Robins was dismissed by Coventry in November, following a rocky start to the current campaign.
A Natural Fit for Stoke
The Derbyshire-based manager could find Stoke an ideal opportunity to rebuild his career. The Potters, despite their struggles, remain a club with ambitions of returning to the Premier League. Robins has previously expressed a desire to test himself at the highest level, and Stoke’s infrastructure and resources could provide the perfect platform for that ambition.
Stoke have admired Robins for some time, reportedly making inquiries about his availability in previous managerial searches. His appointment would align with the club’s need for stability and a coach capable of getting the best out of their squad.
Other Candidates in the Mix
While Robins is the front-runner, other names have also been linked to the vacancy. Nottingham Forest’s Steve Cooper and former Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray are both listed at 5/1, while recently sacked Southampton boss Russell Martin is a 6/1 outsider. However, Robins’ familiarity with the Championship and his track record of navigating challenging situations make him the standout candidate.
Writer’s View
Mark Robins seems like an ideal candidate for Stoke City at this critical juncture. His ability to rebuild teams and foster a winning mentality aligns with the Potters’ immediate needs. However, the club’s revolving-door approach to management raises questions about whether Robins would be given the time required to implement his vision. Stoke must prioritise long-term stability to maximise the potential of their next managerial appointment.
