Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly expressed interest in securing a loan deal for Southampton defender Ronnie Edwards during the upcoming January transfer window.
The Championship club, led by former Saints assistant manager Danny Rohl, is keen to bolster its defensive options as they aim to climb the league table.
Edwards Struggling for Game Time
The 21-year-old centre-back joined Southampton from Peterborough United for £3 million on a four-year deal in the summer. However, Edwards has found first-team opportunities hard to come by. His appearances have been limited to one Premier League outing—a substitute role in the 5-1 loss to Chelsea—and a single game in the Carabao Cup.
Most of his match minutes have been with the under-21s in Premier League 2, under the management of Simon Rusk. Since the arrival of new Southampton manager Željko Juric, Edwards has not made a senior matchday squad, with competition from the likes of Armel Bella-Kotchap reducing his prospects further.
“I’d say I have been finding my feet, just getting used to it. Now it’s just sort of being patient and waiting for my turn,” Edwards told the Daily Echo. “I’m always a team player. I’m always going to be good around the boys and never be a bad egg. It’s just waiting now and hopefully, I get my opportunity.”
Sheffield Wednesday’s Approach
According to The Star, Sheffield Wednesday have identified Edwards as a priority target. The Owls already have a strong relationship with Southampton, having signed midfielder Shea Charles on a season-long loan earlier this year. Charles has thrived in the Championship, which could pave the way for Edwards to make a similar move.
Former Southampton boss Russell Martin had previously suggested Edwards might benefit from a loan to gain valuable first-team experience. With Sheffield Wednesday unlikely to spend significantly in January, a loan deal appears to suit all parties involved.
Future Potential
Despite his limited game time, Edwards is highly regarded in football circles. Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has described him as a potential “£50 million player” once he reaches his full potential. This reputation underscores why Sheffield Wednesday are eager to bring him in as they look to strengthen their defensive options for the remainder of the season.
Writer’s View
Ronnie Edwards’ potential move to Sheffield Wednesday represents a logical step for the young defender. With limited opportunities at Southampton, a loan spell in the Championship would provide him with the chance to gain crucial experience and showcase his abilities in a competitive environment. For Sheffield Wednesday, the addition of a talented and versatile defender could prove vital in their bid to secure a more stable position in the league.
