Swansea City have finally ended the contract stalemate with defender Ben Cabango, who has signed a new four-year deal at the club.
The Wales international’s contract was due to expire at the end of the season, which led Luke Williams and his side to focus on renegotiating with him and fellow defensive partner Harry Darling over the first part of the season.
“Going In The Right Direction”
Cabango has made over 200 appearances for The Jacks since emerging through the club’s academy system, with a brief stint with Welsh league juggernauts The New Saints. He has played in every game so far this season, with the club currently in 11th place in the Championship ahead of a Boxing Day home fixture against Queens Park Rangers.
Speaking to the club upon signing his new deal, the defender said:
“I’m really happy to have signed a new contract with Swansea City. We’ve been talking about it for a while and I think since Andy (Coleman, Swansea City Chairman)’s taken over it’s been really positive. I’ve seen the change obviously with the gaffer as well. It’s all been more positive and everything is going in the right direction.
“I’ve been here for a long time, and I’m so happy and comfortable. I really want to see Swansea City as a club progress. The path that the club is on at the moment, we will be there or there about soon. It’s going to take time and we’re starting to see the results and hopefully we can keep building.
“If I’ve made a few Christmases, I’m more than happy with that. Merry Christmas.”
Writer’s View
It is probably the best Christmas present many Swansea City fans could have got this year. Ben Cabango has been such a pivotal figure in recent years with the club and especially under Luke Williams’ term at the club. Keeping him at the club signifies that there is a belief at the club they can break back into the Premier League and the mood at the club can buoy them towards that. Now the focus should be to secure fellow defender Harry Darling and get some new faces in during the upcoming transfer window.
