Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a move for Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier as they look to bolster their options between the sticks.
According to reports, the Red Devils are keeping a close eye on the 24-year-old Frenchman and could act in January if they find a buyer for their current backup goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir.
Competition for Onana
Andre Onana, who joined Manchester United in the summer of 2023, endured a challenging debut season but has shown significant improvement this term. Despite this progress, the club remains intent on securing a strong competitor for the Cameroonian international. United’s management believes competition could push Onana to new heights, with Meslier viewed as an ideal candidate for the role.
Altay Bayindir, who was brought in from Fenerbahce for £4.3 million, has struggled to make an impression. The Turkish international has featured sparingly, conceding six goals in three EFL Cup appearances, including a difficult outing against Tottenham. United’s hierarchy are reportedly unconvinced by Bayindir and could look to offload him in January.

Why Meslier?
Illan Meslier has re-emerged as a top goalkeeping prospect after Leeds United’s relegation to the Championship. Standing at 6ft 5in, he has been a key figure for Leeds this season, recording 12 clean sheets in 22 matches. His performances have established him as one of the Championship’s best goalkeepers and reignited Manchester United’s interest, which had initially cooled during his inconsistent spell two years ago.
United’s goalkeeping scout, Tony Coton, is reportedly a long-time admirer of Meslier and believes the Frenchman has significant potential. Regular assessments of his performances have reinforced the view that Meslier could provide healthy competition for Onana while also being a long-term investment for the club.
The potential acquisition of Meslier would not only strengthen Manchester United’s goalkeeping options but also reflect the club’s ongoing commitment to improving depth and quality in their squad. Leeds, however, are likely to demand a substantial fee for their mainstay, which could complicate negotiations.
Writer’s View
Illan Meslier’s development at Leeds United has been impressive, and a move to Manchester United could be mutually beneficial. For the Red Devils, securing a young, proven goalkeeper like Meslier would enhance competition and stability in a crucial position. However, convincing Leeds to part ways with their star stopper mid-season could prove to be a significant hurdle.
