Blackburn Rovers Target La Liga Swoop, Burnley Also Interested

Burnley and Blackburn Rovers are reportedly in a fierce battle to bring Oli McBurnie back to the Championship during the January transfer window.

The Scottish striker, currently plying his trade with Las Palmas in Spain’s La Liga, is being targeted for a loan move as both Lancashire rivals seek to bolster their attacking options.

Burnley and Blackburn Compete for McBurnie

Burnley are keen to add a proven striker to their squad and have identified McBurnie as a prime target. The Clarets are prepared to offer a loan deal for the 28-year-old, who joined Las Palmas from Sheffield United last summer. Meanwhile, Blackburn Rovers are pursuing a similar plan, hoping to secure McBurnie to strengthen their push for a playoff spot.

McBurnie has made 16 appearances for Las Palmas this season, contributing two goals and three assists. However, his move to Spain marked his first venture outside British football, having previously spent his entire career in the UK. While his stint in La Liga has been valuable for his development, a return to England could provide him with a familiar environment to rediscover his scoring form.

A Proven Track Record in England

McBurnie’s career highlights include a successful spell with Sheffield United, where he scored 29 goals and provided seven assists in 159 appearances. The striker was instrumental in Chris Wilder’s team that achieved a ninth-place finish in the Premier League during the 2019-20 season. He later played a key role in helping Sheffield United regain promotion to the top flight in 2023 after their relegation in 2021.

Before joining Sheffield United, McBurnie developed his game through various loan spells after starting his career at Leeds United’s academy. He made his professional debut with Bradford City before stints with Swansea City, Newport County, Bristol Rovers, and Barnsley.

What’s Next for McBurnie?

The competition between Burnley and Blackburn underscores the striker’s value to Championship sides seeking an experienced and dynamic forward. Burnley have also expressed interest in Said Benrahma, who is currently struggling for minutes at Lyon, adding further intrigue to their January plans. However, McBurnie’s familiarity with English football and his proven Championship pedigree make him a highly attractive option for both clubs.

Las Palmas may be open to a temporary deal, offering McBurnie a chance to reignite his career in a competitive and familiar setting.
