Morecambe January Transfer Plans Emerge: A Waiting Game Expected

Morecambe manager Derek Adams is preparing for a challenging January transfer window as the Shrimps aim to strengthen their squad to climb out of the lower reaches of League Two.

Adams acknowledges the need for greater quality in midfield and forward areas, but admits the process may take time.

Struggles in Front of Goal

Despite having 11 players score this season, only Ben Tollitt and Hallam Hope have managed more than two goals each. Adams highlighted the team’s inability to capitalize on chances as a key issue:

“We weren’t hitting the target; it’s not been that we aren’t creating or getting into the forward positions, it’s being able to finish the opportunities off.”

The manager added that improving finishing and finding additional goal scorers are critical for the team’s survival hopes. “That’s been our failing so far this season,” he said.

Active Recruitment Approach

Adams has taken an active role in recruitment, reaching out to clubs to highlight Morecambe’s success in developing loan players. He revealed:

“We’re having really good conversations with clubs and agents to try and get the type of player we need.”

Adams is targeting four potential new signings, with loans appearing to be the most feasible option for the Shrimps due to financial constraints. He also hopes to secure the extension of Rhys Williams’ loan deal from Liverpool, with talks ongoing.

The club have also been given a lifeline with the suggestion that JJ McKiernan, one of their breakout stars from last season, could be available on a temporary deal from Lincoln City, his current employer. McKiernan has struggled for game time at the LNER Stadium since his move, and director of football Jez George has suggested the youngster could be given a loan chance for minutes after New Year.

Challenges of the January Window

Adams acknowledged the slow nature of early January negotiations as clubs and players weigh their options:

“Sometimes it can be a really slow process to start with, but then it quickens up when everyone starts to move.”

The manager’s primary focus is on bolstering the squad with the right players to improve results in the second half of the season.

Outlook for Morecambe

The Shrimps remain in a precarious position, and the January transfer window represents a crucial period for the club. Adams’ ability to secure the right players could determine whether Morecambe can turn their season around and avoid the drop.
