David Livermore Addresses Millwall Future

Millwall coach David Livermore has ruled himself out of the running for the vacant managerial position at The Den.

The Lions are on the search for a new head coach after Neil Harris shock departure. The 47-year-old rejoined the club in February but tendered his resignation last weekend following a 1-0 defeat against Middlesbrough. It was Millwall’s third successive loss and their sixth game without a win.

The likes of Stephen Bradley, Alex Neil and Gary O’Neil have been linked to the job, although one man who is not in the running is Livermore. The 44-year-old will take charge of this afternoon’s clash against Blackburn Rovers in what is his third stint at the club as either a player or a coach.

Livermore Not Interested In Head Coach Role

Livermore operated as assistant head coach under Harris. Speaking to South London News ahead of this afternoon’s game, the former Cardiff City coach admitted he is not interested in a promotion but would like to remain at the club under whoever comes in next:

“Absolutely not. I’ve got no ambition for that. I’ve told the chairman I’ve got no interest in the job. My strength is in supporting others. That’s where I feel I can add most value.

“You never say never in your career because you always come to a crossroads at some point, where you say ‘do I take this path or that path, and that’s not that at the moment.

“I’ve spoken with Steve (Gallen) and the chairman and I’ve told them I want my future to be at this football club. I’ve been here a long time. I think I’ve got a lot to offer it. I haven’t been guaranteed, but I’ve been told I’ll be here beyond this season, but it won’t be [as boss] that’s for certain.”

Writer’s View

Livermore is the ideal man to steady the ship whilst the search for Neil Harris’ successor continues. With his departure coming out of the blue, it needed someone close to the team to stabilise the team. Having spent seven years as a player and another seven years in various coaching roles with Millwall before his return this year, he knows the club inside out. Those above him can now afford to take the time to find the ideal candidate, safe in the knowledge that the team is in safe hands.
