Wrexham FC’s Ryan Reynolds To Invest In New Club

Ryan Reynolds is close to finalising his next football investment, as reports suggest he is part of a consortium poised to purchase Colombian top-flight side La Equidad.

The deal, expected to be completed this week, highlights Reynolds’ growing influence in football ownership following the remarkable success at Wrexham.

Reynolds Expands His Football Portfolio

Reynolds, who along with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Rob McElhenney took over Wrexham for £2 million in 2020, has transformed the Welsh club’s fortunes. Under their leadership, Wrexham secured back-to-back promotions, rising from the National League to League One in just two years.

Now, Reynolds is reportedly joining forces with Hollywood actress Eva Longoria and the Tylis-Porter group to acquire La Equidad, a team based in Bogotá, Colombia. According to Colombian outlet El Tiempo, the deal is valued at just under $20 million and will be officially signed this Thursday.

This marks Reynolds’ second foray into Latin American football after previously investing in Mexican club Necaxa in April. His strategic partnerships highlight a growing focus on expanding his global sports portfolio.

Who Are La Equidad?

La Equidad, nicknamed the ‘Aseguradores’ (Insurers), were founded in 1982 by Seguros La Equidad, a Colombian insurance company. The club earned promotion to Colombia’s top division in 2006 and won the Copa Colombia two years later in 2008.

Currently, La Equidad play their home matches at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo, which they share with several Bogotá-based clubs, including Fortaleza C.E.I.F. and Tigres F.C. Despite finishing 11th in the 2023 season, La Equidad qualified for the playoffs, though they failed to advance after losing all six group-stage matches.

‘Welcome to Bogotá’?

With the success of the hit documentary series Welcome to Wrexham, fans are already speculating whether Reynolds could bring a similar production to Colombia. Such a project would spotlight La Equidad and Colombian football to a global audience, much like Wrexham’s rise captivated fans worldwide.

Reynolds’ involvement could provide a significant financial boost and media exposure for La Equidad, potentially mirroring the impact seen at Wrexham. The Colombian club may soon find itself at the centre of Hollywood’s football fascination.

Writer’s View

Ryan Reynolds’ investment in La Equidad is a logical next step following his success with Wrexham. By targeting clubs with untapped potential, Reynolds is blending business acumen with his global celebrity status to revitalise teams and raise their profiles. If the deal is finalised, La Equidad could soon experience a transformational journey similar to Wrexham’s, further cementing Reynolds’ reputation as a savvy football investor.
