Now coaching at Doncaster Rovers, Frank Sinclair has scarcely had a moment outside of football since beginning his career with Chelsea over thirty years ago.
Across a career that yielded in excess of 750 club appearances, the Jamaican international won the FA Cup and League Cup with the Blues, before lifting the latter for a second time with Leicester City in 2000. He then featured for the likes of Burnley, Huddersfield Town and Lincoln City before joining Wrexham in the fifth tier.
The Red Dragons’ rise has been well documented since, quite literally. Disney Plus’s ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ has attracted views worldwide, thanks to the takeover of the club by American actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
Sinclair was particularly impressed with the documentary, telling The Real EFL’s Kyle Kennealey: “It was the first documentary that I watched and was really interested in how they went about their daily work. It was quite different to what you would say are the traditional football clubs; they look like they’re learning on the job and I’ve watched it from afar.”
The football world was shocked on 9th February 2021 when Rob and Ryan secured ownership of Wrexham. Since then, the Red Dragons have hit new heights, while the owners have won admiration from the former Wrexham man.
“The two charismatic owners have come in, they’ve told their story throughout the football club and have really been ambitious in what they want to do to a point of stupidity,” he joked.
“The more they go along, the more financial backing they give the football club.”
“It’s been remarkable to see, and I still speak to people that work at the club and they talk about how exciting the times are right now. The owners are pushing the football club.”
Sinclair also revealed he had his doubts about the legitimacy of the American pairs’ takeover but has now seen it pay off.
“I thought it was a little bit of a gimmick, as probably most people would have said, seeing two Hollywood superstars taking on a football club.”
“The more you listened to their interviews, the more passion you saw that was coming through them. They’ve certainly backed the talk and the ambition that they’ve had.”
“You can only respect that and for me, it’s just great for football, the exposure that the National League got last season. It can only help the game.”
