Mansfield Town’s Jordan Bowery has reiterated that staying in League One remains the club’s top priority this season, despite their strong start.
A recent run of five defeats saw the Stags slide from the upper reaches of the table to mid-table, but a 0-0 draw at Charlton Athletic last weekend steadied the ship.
Staying Up Is the Main Objective
Bowery, now operating as a central defender after spells as a striker and wing-back, emphasised that survival is the key focus for the newly promoted side.
“The ambition at the start of the season was to stay in this league. I believe we will do that – anything better than that then happy days. But the main objective is to stay in the league.”
The versatile player acknowledged the team’s strong start, which exceeded expectations, but also highlighted the challenge of adapting to the higher division.
“We got off to a great start which surprised a lot of people – it might have surprised us too,” said Bowery. “Then we had a bit of a blip over five games. But we put that to bed at Charlton when we got a point.”
Adapting to League One
Bowery acknowledged the challenges of League One, with sharper players and formidable opposition.
“Players in this division are a lot sharper and quicker than League Two, and there are some massive teams with a lot of ex-Premier League clubs,” he noted. “But we are enjoying it and we don’t fear anyone.”
Bowery also expressed his enjoyment of his new role as a centre-half, having embraced the position following injuries in the squad.
“It has been a new challenge and I am embracing it,” he said. “Hopefully now I can stay in there and help us try to keep some more clean sheets.”
Looking Ahead
Looking ahead to Saturday’s clash against his former club Rotherham United, Bowery expects a tough encounter against Steve Evans’ side.
“It will be a tough game. They are on a high and it should be a good clash,” he said. “A Steve Evans side is always aggressive, puts you under pressure, and works hard. We have to be ready for that.”
Writer’s View
Mansfield Town’s aim to consolidate their League One status is pragmatic and achievable, especially with players like Jordan Bowery stepping up in multiple roles. Their early-season form showed promise, but the recent struggles serve as a reality check. Bowery’s versatility and leadership will be critical as the Stags navigate a tough festive period, aiming to turn recent results into a foundation for stability.
